Deep Rest Practice

Restorative Yin Yoga for People Who Can't Switch Off

If your shoulders live somewhere around your ears by Friday afternoon, this is the class you need. Restorative Yin is the slow end of our timetable: fewer postures, longer holds, and every single one supported by bolsters, blocks, and blankets so your muscles can release completely instead of working to hold a shape. Each pose settles for three to five minutes. That sounds almost too easy, right up until you're lying there and realise your jaw has finally unclenched for the first time since Monday morning.

Three to Five Minute Holds

Long, still, supported stretches that work into connective tissue rather than muscle. Slow by design, deep by result.

Candlelit Evening Sessions

Most weeknight classes run in low light with no music or very quiet ambient sound, because stimulation isn't the point here.

Zero Flexibility Required

Everything is propped so your body does no work at all. You could turn up stiff as a plank and still finish every posture comfortably.

What Restorative Yin Actually Is

Slow Down, Stay Still, Let the Tissue Soften

Yin yoga targets the fascia, ligaments, and joints rather than the big muscle groups you'd work in a flow class. Postures are held for minutes at a time, always with props under you, so your body can settle into a shape without straining. The goal isn't to stretch further, it's to stop fighting the shape and give the tissue time to respond. We keep the room warm, the lights low, and the teacher's voice steady. By the third posture most people are breathing slower than they have all week.

  • Deep tissue release through long, supported posture holds
  • Every session ends with a ten-minute guided yoga nidra
  • Props set up for you before class so you never have to fumble

Teachers Who Specialise in Stillness, Not Sweat

Restorative work asks something different of a teacher. You have to be comfortable with long silences, unhurried observations, and the fact that half the room will be lying face-down for four minutes at a time. Our lead Yin instructor Marcus spent a decade as a physiotherapist before training in therapeutic yoga, and he brings that clinical eye to every class. He'll suggest a blanket under your knee, or a slight adjustment to your hip angle, and suddenly a posture that felt awkward becomes something you could stay in for an hour.

I booked Yin because I couldn't sleep. Two months later I'm off the melatonin and my physio says my hip mobility has improved more than in the six months before that.

Fascia-Focused Holds

We stretch connective tissue, not muscle fibres. Different tissue, different rules, much longer holds.

Nervous System Reset

Slow breathing and stillness pull your body out of fight-or-flight mode. You'll feel it by the first pose.

Joint Space and Mobility

Regular practice restores healthy range in hips, spine, and shoulders without ever pushing past comfortable.

Guided Yoga Nidra

The last ten minutes of every class is a full yoga nidra, half-way between sleep and deep relaxation.

A Typical Restorative Class

What Happens From Cushion to Candlelight

It's slow, but it's structured. This is how one of our evening Yin classes unfolds from the moment you settle onto your mat.

Reserve Your Evening Slot
1

Settle and Dim the Lights

Come in, drop your bag, find a bolster and blanket already arranged at your mat. Sit or lie down as you prefer.

2

Check-In Round

The teacher asks how you're arriving. Tight hips? Sore neck? It shapes which postures get extra attention later.

3

Guided Breath and Body Scan

Six to eight minutes of counted breathing and a slow scan from toes to crown to bring you into the room properly.

4

First Three Supported Holds

Usually hip openers or forward folds, held for around four minutes each with props under your knees or chest.

5

Twists and Back Release

Two supported twists and a gentle sphinx backbend that lets the front body open without any muscular effort at all.

6

Yoga Nidra and Closing

Lying flat, covers optional, a ten-minute guided yoga nidra ends the class with most people half asleep.

Restorative Studio Atmosphere

Small Cushions, Warm Room, Very Few Lights

The space you'll practise in, taken during actual evening sessions with the lighting exactly as you'll find it.

Common Restorative Questions

Everything You Wanted to Ask About Yin

These come up constantly, so we've answered them properly here instead of leaving you to guess.

Not Sure If Yin Is Right For You?

If you're dealing with an injury, chronic pain, or just general fatigue, give us a call. We'll be honest about whether Yin helps or if another style suits you better.

Speak with our Yin teachers

Timing and target tissue. Yin holds postures for three to five minutes to work into fascia and joints, whereas slow yoga still targets muscles with shorter holds. Completely different physiological goals.

Very likely, yes. Yin isn't about range so much as tissue quality and nervous system regulation. Plenty of very mobile people find Yin much harder than they expected because of the stillness involved.

You shouldn't skip it, but you should tell the teacher beforehand. Marcus has a physio background and can tailor every pose to avoid aggravating the area while still getting benefit elsewhere.

One session a week is a solid starting point. Most of our regulars come twice, and a handful do three or four. You'll notice sleep and stress improvements within a month at one class per week.

Warm, not hot. We keep the room at around 24 degrees so your body stays comfortable during long holds, but you won't be sweating through your clothes like a hot yoga studio.
